Recent Getzlaf, Scott Niedermayer rumors
Category: Trades and Rumors
There have been two Ryan Getzlaf rumors circling the net these days, but I’d not put much stock in the first one.
Rumors out of Toronto suggest Leaf management has a hard-on for Ducks C Ryan Getzlaf, in that he’d bring a lot of missing qualities to a lackluster Leafs squad. This much I can believe. What I don’t see, however, is what the Ducks would want to make the deal happen.
The second rumor, FAR more likely in my eyes, is that Getzlaf is close to signing an extension with the Ducks. This would be smart by Burke, to lock Getzlaf up as soon as possible for three reasons:
- If Ryan has a really good season, he might demand more than he will right now.
- To avoid any potential offer sheets.
- To give him a better idea of his payroll for next season which may impact trades he makes or doesn’t make this season.
What would I think the deal will be? If I had to wager I would put it at 5 years for $27.5 million (cap hit of $5.5M/year).
Lastly, rumors indicate Scott Niedermayer is leaning towards returning. He has been working out and skating lately and has himself announced earlier this week a self-imposed deadline on making a decision. He states his decision will be made before Xmas one way or the other.

Hey you.
As rumors go, this is what I’ve read and heard from reliable (non-press-associated) sources:
(read @ http://www.ocregister.com/sports/burke-lowe-penner-1910949-getzlaf-right): Getzlaf’s agent is in “talks” with Burkie. Getz himself is not even thinking contracts. In his own words, he’s still ‘got a whole season to play’.
(heard via close friend): Scott Niedermayer has imposed a deadline for himself to answer to the club “sometime in November” (very likely mid- to late- November). The impression he gave my source is that he intended to return in December. And the reports of him starting a more rigorous workout are correct.
Keep your fingers crossed. There’s still time for him to change his mind.

Hey Finny,
Thanks for the extra info.
I truly believe Scott will be back in December, but I have doubts about Teemu…Hopefully he follows suit though as we can use his scoring touch right now =)
