Andy McDonald heads to St.Louis; Doug Weight a Duck
Category: Trades and Rumors
Brian Burke surprised many fans today, dealing center Andy McDonald to the St.Louis Blues for veteran Doug Weight. While everyone was expecting a move, needed to clear tag space before Scott Niedermayer could return to the lineup, McDonald was not among the rumored names to be dealt (Sean O’Donnell, Mathieu Schneider and Todd Marchant topping the list).
While this may look like a St.Louis advantage at first glance, the key for Anaheim is Weight is a UFA at end of the season. McDonald is on the books for 3.333 million next year. So not only do the Ducks clear enough space for Niedermayer to return, they make some room towards extending Corey Perry.
Some will also note McDonald was in a slump this season, perhaps due to not playing alongside Teemu Selanne. Weight will bring the Ducks veteran experience and leadership and may click with Todd Bertuzzi better than speedy Andy Mac.
It is unknown whether Weight will make the game in Minnesota tonight.
The Ducks also received Czech prospect Michael Birner and a 7th-round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry draft. Birner has potential as a third or fourth line player.
