Ducks ink Hnidy to two year deal

Posted by Varius @ 6:46 PM, Thursday Jul 5th, 2007

Former Atlanta Thrasher defenseman Shane Hnidy has agreed to a two year deal with the Ducks. Shane is likely an upgrade over unsigned free agent Joe DiPenta and will likely play on the bottom pairing.

Shane does bring a physical game the Ducks like and good things could happen for him in Anaheim as they did for Beauchemin.

First of all… welcome to the Ducks blogging community. Many thanks to Earl for point me this way. You have been bookmarked ^_^

Next, I was reading up on Hnidy and while he is the physical type of player that the Ducks organization is I am also seeing that’s he’s not exactly a fast skater not particularly great in the defensive zone. I would have hoped for for someone to step into the role of a defenseman that they have a good showing in their own zone to get the puck going to other direction.

You are correct about his skating, however Joey D wasn’t much of a skater himself. As a 6th/7th defense man on a fairly good Ducks D-squad (an awesome squad if Nieds sticks around) I think he will work out fine. Besides, defensive zone coverage and skating are both skills that can be worked on and improved, unlike other aspects you simply can’t be taught.

Thanks for the welcome as well =)
